THE OUTCOME PROGRAMS
Taping techniques can be useful in patients with shoulder pain.
Often the humeral head is in an anterior position and impinges/stresses
the anterior tissues. A quick check can be performed by gently
grasping the humeral head in an AP direction with one hand, while the
other gently grasps the distal scapular spine and coracoid process.
View your hands from the side and see if the humeral head is sitting in
the middle or anterior. I have found that people with normal
shoulders and no pain usually sit in the middle, and many patients sit
anterior. Using McConnell tape, either one strip or two, apply the
first piece from the middle of the anterior region of the humeral head
around to the infraspinatus musculotendinous junction (Pic 1, where one
finger is on superior humeral head, and the other is on the
acromion). Apply the second strip of tape 1cm away from the edge of
the first, and use your other hand to gently push the humeral head
posterior, and then fasten the tape (Pics 2 & 3). The tape
should be away from the edges to prevent curling, and patients should be
instructed to gently pull off, not rip off rapidly. Relief may be
either from repositioning, reminding the patient their shoulder is
problematic and thus decreasing usage, or simply supratentorial.
Either way, it works quite well.
